Mohali, June 19

To prevent commuters from taking U-turns on Airport Road, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has started installing crash barriers. Currently, the work is in progress behind Sectors 70 and 71, where residents are mostly seen crossing these dividers carelessly.

As the grills are missing in most of these parts, people cross over the dividers to shorten their routes through U- turns. GMADA is spending Rs 34 lakh in the first phase for this project. Chief Engineer, GMADA, Sunil Kansal, says: “In the next phase, we will install these crash barriers near the TDI buildings towards the Kharar end of Airport Road”.

These barriers are made of strong metal alloys. These can bear stronger collisions, unlike the grills. The officials also claim that these barriers will not be easy to pull out.

As for the repair of the Airport Road, a final layer is yet to be added. XEN in charge of the project, Parminder Singh, informed that it was a part of the Rs 28 crore tender that was issued for re-carpeting the 200 feet wide road. — TNS
