About 500 to be left behind in UT government schools

Over 485 students who have applied for admission in Class XI in city government schools will remain left out the ongoing session.

As per records gathered from the UT Education Department, a total of 14,655 applicants have applied for 12,835 seats in 40 government schools. However, the department will fill 10 per cent extra seats in both humanities and commerce each, and 15 per cent in science, but still as many as 488 students are sure to be left out.

We will fill extra seats as some students move to to private schools or clear some entrance exams,” said the District Education Officer (DEO) Anujit Kaur.

Humanities has remained the favourite stream as a large number of students have applied for the stream. As many as 7,918 students applied for humanities section. As many as 3,201 and 2,214 students have filled their forms to get admission in science and commerce section, respectively. The remaining ones applied for vocational courses.

“Students have much interest in humanities as it has varied career options. Many students also choose this stream because they score low marks and find it easy to get admission,” said an official.

This year 16 new courses have been added in vocational studies, including IT and data applications, which has the highest number of applications with 338 candidates. Around 289 students have showed their interest in stenography (English) and cost accounting courses.

A total 30 seats have been allocated for each course of vocational studies. However, nine courses have got less than 30 applications. Retail management, food production, textile design, design, financial marketing management, cost accountancy, tourism and front office operations, tourism are among others courses available.

School and stream allotment list for the first round of counselling will be displayed on June 30, following which the selected students can submit the fee by July 3. The classes will start from the next day. Second round of counselling will be held on July 16 and 17.
