Patiala, December 27

With a few days left for the panchayat elections in the state, smuggling of country-made liquor from the neighbouring state, Haryana, has increased in the district.

In fact, the Patiala police have seized 886 bottles of country-made liquor and 475 liquor boxes from various checkpoints in the past two days.

Sources revealed that the demand for liquor had already increased in the rural areas as prospective candidates had started wooing voters.

On Wednesday, the Patiala police had seized 360 bottles of country-made liquor from a car. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the seized bottles had a stamp of Haryana.

In another incident, the police had also seized 180 bottles of illicit liquor near Bathoi Kalan village from a car.

The sources revealed that there had been a steep rise in the smuggling of liquor ahead of the panchayat elections scheduled to be held on December 30.
