Chandigarh, September 19

A mother-son duo was sentenced to eight-year imprisonment in a dowry death case today. Kanta Devi (55) and Amandeep (30), residents of Burail, were accused of having set 24-year-old Toni Rani on fire in September 2014.

An FIR was registered under Sections 498 A, 307 and 34 of the IPC against Toni’s husband Amandeep, mother-in-law Kanta Devi and father-in-law Ishwar Singh, who is also said to have died of burns in the incident. The complainant in the case was the victim’s father, Tejpal Singh of Kurukshetra. He said he had married his daughter to Amandeep in June 2014 and had given dowry “more than he could afford”. However, Toni’s in-laws kept pressuring her for more dowry.

Toni was regularly beaten up by her in-laws and he had to broker peace on multiple occasions. On the fateful day, she had called her father and told him that her in-laws had sprayed kerosene on her and were about to burn her. Tejpal left for Chandigarh but was informed by a relative of the accused that his daughter had been burned and was admitted to the PGI. She later succumbed to her injuries.
