Members of the Sixth Pay Commission committee of the state government discussed financial matters regarding salaries of employees with experts in a meeting at Punjabi University on Friday.

The team, under the chairmanship of Jai Singh Gill, discussed theoretical aspects before finalising pay concerns and sought academic suggestions from the experts in the field of economics.

The team members, included SS Rajput, Dr DS Kalah, and AS Ahluwalia. They held the meeting with Dr BS Ghuman, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Dr Lakhwinder Gill, Dean Research, Dr Anita Gill, HoD, Department of Distance Education, Dr Jaswinder Brar, Dr Kesar Singh Bhangu and others.

Chairman Jai Singh Gill said the motive behind the meeting was to acquire key theoretical knowledge of salary determination, discuss international standards of payroll formulas and the economic status of the state government.

They discussed aspects including rising gap between salaries of employees along with reforms in salary structure suggesting incentive based salaries.

Dr Lakhwinder Singh Gill said the commission should implement an approach toward the expectations of its employees. “Youth from the state are going abroad for jobs. While other states pay full salary to employees after hiring, the employees in the state were given only the basic pay for the first three years.”

Dr Ghuman said the mandate of Pay Commissions is to act as a bridge between the aspirations of employees and financial status of the government. “A hike in salary attracts young talent towards government sector jobs,” he said.

He advocated minimising the gap between minimum wages and maximum wages and suggested performance related incentives.
