Chandigarh, June 7

The fire wing of the Municipal Corporation (MC) has issued notices to more than 50 buildings in the city for not having proper fire safety arrangements.

The MC had completed a survey recently, following which notices are being issued to those found violating the fire safety norms.

Sources said different teams visited 130 buildings and ascertained the adequacy or contravention of fire-fighting and safety measures in accordance with the National Building Code of India.

Anil Kumar Garg, Additional Commissioner, MC, said the department had started the process to send advisories to the owner/occupiers of the buildings for removing discrepancies in their buildings to avoid any mishap.

Sources said in some buildings, yard hydrants were found leaking. Nozzle and internal hydrants accessories were found missing at some buildings. The MC teams discovered that at some buildings, fire detection and public address (PA) systems were not found in working condition. Sources said basic hose pipes and hose reel nozzle were found missing in most buildings.

The inspection teams found irregularities in the firefighting system also.

Hold awareness drive: Yadav

MC Commissioner KK Yadav on Thursday directed the Chief Fire Officer-cum-Additional Commissioner to conduct an awareness campaign on how to act in case of emergency.

He told them to ensure fire-fighting and safety measures were in place in buildings across the city in accordance with the National Building Code of India.
