A major fire broke out at the furniture market in Lakhnaur village here today. Four shops have reportedly been gutted.

Sources said the fire was first noticed by a worker around 10 pm. “Within minutes, it spread and engulfed four to five shops,” said the sources. The furniture items and other materials lying at the shops were destroyed in the incident.

Mohali Fire Officer Karam Chand Sood said around five fire tenders were pressed into service. “It took us more than an hour to control the fire. Now, other shops in the market are safe,” said Sood.

The market has nearly 35 furniture shops. The estimate loss in the incident is yet to be ascertained.

When asked about the reason behind the incident, Sood said it was too early to say anything.

Meanwhile, the owners of the shops gutted in fire reached the spot. “The loss will run into several lakhs,” said a shopkeeper. — TNS
