A 20-year-old migrant allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his rented accommodation in Mohali village today.

The victim, identified as Ajay Kumar, was a carpenter by profession. He hailed from Sitamarhi village of Bihar and was staying in a rented accommodation along with his elder brother Surinder Kumar and his family.

According to Surinder Kumar, he and his wife were at home when Ajay went inside his room and closed the door from inside. “After some time, my wife knocked at the door of his room, but there was no response. We peeped into the room through a window and saw him hanging,” he claimed.

On getting information, the police reached the spot and brought down the victim. He was taken to the Civil Hospital at Phase VI where doctors declared him brought dead.

The police claimed that they did not find any suicide note at the spot. After recording the statements of the kin, the police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
