2 UT cops suspended for rape bid

Two UT constables have been booked in a zero FIR for rape attempt registered at the Industrial Area police station.

Both constables have been suspended and a departmental inquiry initiated against them.

Police officials said the victim reported that she accompanied her friend, who had gone to meet her acquaintances Naveen and Shradhanand at Murthal.

When they reached Murthal, both constables offered them breakfast and asked them to rest in a hotel.

The victim alleged that constable Shardhanand tried to rape her. When she resisted, he thrashed her.

She tried to call up the police, but Naveen took her mobile phone and disconnected the call. She managed to escape from the hotel.

She alleged that Naveen and Shradhanand were threatening her asking her not to report the matter to police.

Police officials said since the incident took place at Murthal, a zero FIR was registered in Chandigarh and the matter had been forwarded to the Haryana Police.

The police said a medical examination of the victim was conducted and her statement recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC. A decision on their arrest will be taken after they arrive in Chandigarh and are interrogated.

The case has been registered under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) , 354-A (sexual harassment), 376 (rape) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the IPC.
