Workshop dwells on biodiversity

A daylong awareness and capacity-building workshop was held at the Zila Parishad to help make efforts to conserve the district’s biodiversity and observe Wildlife Week. Chairperson of the District Biodiversity Board-cum-ADC (Development) Sakshi Sawhney presided over the meeting.

Speaking at the event, the ADC said the government was making various efforts to conserve the rich biodiversity of the state. As part of the efforts, ancient trees at the historical village of Lakhi Jungle have been covered as a park to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. Besides, 550 saplings will be planted in every village during the yearlong celebrations to mark the occasion.

Member-secretary of the Biodiversity Board, Kuldeep Gandhi, welcomed the gathering and moderated the discussions. The old water body of village Gobindpura, rich in flora and fauna, was also discussed.

Dr Gurjit Kaur, professor, Government Rajindra College, who is also a member of the Biodiversity Board, said the college has developed a botanical garden which is home to many medicinal plants. Member of the Board Dr Jatinder Sehgal gave information about the butterfly park that has come up in Joggers Park.

Officials and employees of Nehru Yuva Kendra, agriculture department, youth services department and science teachers from various government schools participated and shared their experience.
