Bathinda, June 15

The Vigilance Bureau nabbed a head constable posted at the Civil Hospital police post red-handed while accepting Rs 5,000 in bribe on Friday.

Vigilance Bureau SP Bhupinderjit Singh confirmed that head constable Jaswant Singh was caught red-handed while accepting bribe from complainant Sukhmander Singh of Mehta village in Bathinda district.

The complainant had approached the bureau saying that his relative Ramandeep Singh was working with a commission agent named Satish Kumar in the grain market.

On June 12, Satish Kumar alleged Ramandeep Singh had hit his two-year-old child and handed him over to the police.

Later, Satish Kumar told the police to let off the accused as he didn’t want to take any action against him.

However, head constable Jaswant Singh demanded Rs 15,000 for giving a compromise copy and the deal was fixed at Rs 10,000, the complainant said.

He said they gave him Rs 5,000 on the spot and Jaswant told them to collect the compromise copy after giving the remaining amount. Thereafter, they approached the bureau and a trap was laid on Friday afternoon.

The head constable was caught red-handed taking Rs 5,000. Dr Dhiraj Garg and Dr Gagandeep Singla were the government witnesses in the case.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered at the Vigilance Bureau police station here. — TNS
