Two anti-aircraft guns have been installed at Shaheed Nand Singh Chowk also known as Fauji Chowk in the city.

These guns are the one which were very used during the war in 1971. Their range of fire is up to three km.

Naib Subedar Nand Singh had bravely fought with Japanese in the Burma war before India’s independence and this brave soldier of the Sikh regiment was honoured with Victoria cross.

Later, in 1947, he took upon enemies at Srinagar, but died while fighting as a bullet hit him.

For his bravery, he was honoured Mahavir Chakra. Later, a statue was installed in the city in his remembrance.

For the past many years, various organisations have been demanding beautification of the chowk and now the district administration, with help of Army authorities, has installed two anti-aircraft guns.

Ex-servicemen Welfare Organisation, Punjab, president Balbir Singh Sidhu appreciated the step and to uplift the other chowks or places in the name of martyrs, meetings are regularly held.

Earlier, Fauji Chowk was asymmetric in shape. It was given an oval shape for smooth flow of traffic.
