Bathinda, September 25

A tent pitched in the middle of a road on the railway road left commuters high and dry here today. The tent erected for the purpose of holding a function by a shopkeeper left residents fuming as it affected the flow of traffic on the road.

Pitching tents to organise functions and even langars is a common feature in the city. However, many a time, roads are damaged while erecting tents besides creating traffic chaos, but Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) has never made any effort to stop this practice.

Though MC permission is required to organise an event at a public place, it has been observed that most of the time organisers of such events fail to approach the MC. Even after the event is over, they leave without ensuring that all waste generated during the event is properly disposed of.

Paramjit Singh, a city resident, said two days back he was going to his friends place at Veer colony and when he entered a street at the end the street was blocked as tent was erected for some function and even there was no space to turn the car in that narrow street, due to which we faced huge problem.

Another resident Tanya said the MC should look into this matter as it created a lot of trouble for commuters and it also wasted time and fuel as well.

Mayor Balwant Rai Nath said it was the duty of organisers of such events to seek permission from the MC. Roads could be damaged to fix a tent. It was the duty of the organisers to ensure that no disruption was caused to traffic movement and no waste such as paper glasses, plates or food waste was thrown on the road.
