Bathinda, February 11

The sullage carrier acquisition issue will be addressed soon as the Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) has filed a petition in district court claiming that they have been acquiring land for the development of the city. The next date of hearing on the issue has been scheduled on Februry15.

The MCB has kept its fingers crossed because the sullage carrier project would provide respite to the city residents before the anvil of monsoons.

Work on laying a 12.5-km long parallel pipeline adjoining the sullage carrier to increase its capacity has not be undertaken from May, 2017 as various farmers moved court against land acquisition.

Finance Minister and local MLA Manpreet Singh Badal said woes of water logging would be resolved soon.

The main sullage carrier was constructed in 1991 and had a water carrying capacity of 104 million litres per day. As only treated water is released in the carrier, the volume of water increases during monsoon in the absence of a dedicated storm water system in the city.

In 2013, the MCB decided to enhance the capacity of the sullage carrier, which carries the water treated at sewage treatment plant (STP). Later a detailed project report was prepared and the state government also gave approval but the project remained on back-burner. In 2015, Noida-based Triveni Company was roped in and they have been able to lay only 3- km pipeline till date.
