Samagh village school girl wins silver in swimming

MUKTSAR: Deepali Attri, a Class XII student of Guru Nanak Dev Public Senior Secondary School at Samagh village here, has brought laurels to the district by winning a silver medal in the swimming competition 50-mtr (back) (U-19) of the 64th National School Games held in Delhi recently.

Deepali Attri, a Class XII student of Guru Nanak Dev Public Senior Secondary School at Samagh village here, has brought laurels to the district by winning a silver medal in the swimming competition 50-mtr (back) (U-19) of the 64th National School Games held in Delhi recently.

The Deputy Commissioner and school staff have congratulated Deepali Attri on her achievement.

Deepali’s mother trained her in swimming. Her father is sub-inspector in the police. She was fond of swimming from her early school days and her parents too supported her. She has got training from Patiala, Sangrur, Delhi and Bengaluru as well.

For the last few years, her family has been living in Malout. Deepali also practice at a pool in Malout town.

Malkit Singh Khosa, District Education Officer, Muktsar, said, “The girl is intelligent in academics as well. She had also won prizes in the inter-district games last year. Earlier this year, she had participated in the 43rd Junior Punjab State Swimming Competition in Jalandhar and had bagged five gold medals, creating new records. This was for the first time after 1997 that she bagged five gold medals.”

Meanwhile, some other officials of the Education Department said she had also achieved new heights in the swimming and water polo championship held in Ludhiana this year.

On Deepali’s achievement, some social activists said people should treat girls and boys equally as girls were no less than anybody in any field now.
