Barnala, September 24

The continuous rain has caused losses to farmers in the region. Farmers are worried that their debt would increase further this year as they will not able to recover even their input cost.

“Rain, along with high-velocity winds, has flattened my crop on all six acres. I was preparing to harvest my crop, but heavy rain has damaged my crop. I will not be able to recover my input cost this year and my debt will increase further,” said Sukhwinder Singh, a farmer from Dhanaual Khurd village.

Some other farmers of the area shared the same tale of woes. They demanded immediate assessment of damage to their crops. They also demanded immediate release of compensation.

“I was expecting that the bumper crop this year would help my family to clear all debts. But, rain has shattered all hopes,” said Gurmeet Singh, a farmer.

Some farmers also disclosed that they had started sowing vegetables, but rain has destroyed them as well.

“This year, I started sowing vegetables on around one acre, but rain has damaged everything. My crop has submerged in rainwater. I need to remove water immediately, but rain has not stopped yet,” said Sukhwinder Singh from Sanghera village. — TNS
