Pig farming is gaining popularity among state farmers as a group of youngsters from four districts recently completed their week-long training at Krishi Vigyan kendar (centre) at Handiaya in Barnala.

The scientific pig farming training course started on June 7 and concluded on 13. The majority of farmers believe that gone are the days when farmers were not interested in pig farming.

“Pig farming can be a big source of income if farmers start taking it properly. Here course are being offered in a scientific way with all facilities. Government also provides required money through subsidized loans and farmers must show some interest in it to increase their income” said Satwinder Singh, a youngster from Handiaya.

Centre offers training under the supervision of well trained staff led by Associate director of centre Prahlad Singh Tanwar.

“The input cost of farming has been increasing with the passing of time, but income is declining due to various reasons. Farmers urgently need to augment their income from non-farming sources and piggery could help for this purpose in a big way” said Tanwar

Dr Surinder Singh, associate professor (Animal husbandry) said that youngsters were showing interest in non-farming sources of income.

“Till some years back, farmers did not see pig farming with respect. But now since they have understood that it’s a source of good income, they have started showing interest in it” said Kartar Singh, another farmer from Dhauala. — TNS
