As paddy procurement is season is on, the overloading of trucks has become a common sight at the grain market in the city these days. The overloading is posing a threat to the lives of commuters. The authorities concerned have failed to take steps that could act as a deterrent.

Owing to the apathetic attitude of the authorities, the overloaded trucks can be seen carrying sacks of grains double the capacity. The overloaded trucks pose a risk to the lives of motorists and residents.

Sources said the Transport Department and the traffic police were playing a mute spectator to this open violation of traffic rules. The authorities must keep a regular check and challan those who exceed the permissible limits of carrying goods in trucks/any other vehicle. Sacks of paddy could be seen bulging out of overloaded trucks.

The sources said the apathetic attitude of the authorities concerned can be gauged from the fact that they wanted to let the procurement of paddy continue in an unhindered manner. But the lives of commuters are taken for granted because if these overloaded trucks overturn on the road, then it can result in causality.

Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Gurmeet Singh said, “We have not received any complaint regarding the overloading of trucks so far. So, no challans have been issued till now. But if we receive complaints, we will definitely take action against the violators.”
