Open athletics meet from today

BATHINDA: The 93rd Punjab Open Athletics Championship (junior open) will kick off at Sports School, Ghudda, from tomorrow. It’s a two-day event. This championship is dedicated to the former international athlete late Baldev Singh Brar, founder president the Malwa Advance Education Society.

The 93rd Punjab Open Athletics Championship (junior open) will kick off at Sports School, Ghudda, from tomorrow. It’s a two-day event. This championship is dedicated to the former international athlete late Baldev Singh Brar, founder president the Malwa Advance Education Society.

The games would be inaugurated by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (general), Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu, and the Subdivisional Magistrate, Amarinder Singh Tiwana. On the closing ceremony on October 15, MLA Pritam Kotbhai will be the chief guest. The Deputy Commissioner, Praneet, will be the guest of honour. The former chief commissioner, Income Tax, LR Nayyar, will be the special guest on the occasion.

Addressing mediapersons, Punjab Athletics Association general secretary KPS Brar (IRS) said more than 800 athletes from 22 districts would participate in this event and under the guidance of the Sports Department, NIS, Patiala, and Punjab Institute of Sports, events in U-14, 16, 18 (boys and girls) categories would be held.

Brar said Asian record holder in shotput Tejinderpal Singh Toor, gold medallist in triple jump in recently held Asian Games Arpinder Singh and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in discus throw Navjot Kaur Dhillon would be the centre of attraction.

Apart from these, 21 national medallists of junior national athletics championship would be honoured in the event with a cash prize of Rs 11,000, Rs 7 500 and Rs 5,000.
