Muktsar, September 13

Panjab University Constituent College, Sikhwala village, organised a series of lectures on linguistics and importance of mother tongue on Thursday and Friday.

Resource person Dr Joga Singh, former Professor of Linguistics at Punjabi University, Patiala, acquainted the students with the basics of linguistics. Prof Singh, an eminent scholar in the field with a doctorate degree in linguistics from York University, UK, emphasised the importance of learning linguistics to gain a command over the language.

He said there was a need to bust myths regarding language learning. “According to an independent research conducted by MIT, UNESCO and the British Council, it has been established that learning of a second or foreign language in classroom settings is easier for grown-ups than for children,” he said.

He said mother tongue should be the sole medium of instruction for primary classes. Principal Dr Iqbal Singh Sandhu thaked Dr Joga for sharing valuable insights with students and teachers.
