Bathinda, July 20

Traffic lights at various places on the GT Road, including Teen Koni Chowk, have been lying defunct for the past few days, leading to chaos at major intersections of the city.

Pedestrians and motorists have urged the traffic police to repair the defunct traffic signals. The GT road witnesses heavy vehicular movement all day as it facilitates easy connectivity to National Highway 8.

The non-functioning of traffic lights at the Teen Koni Chowk has made the travel a daring adventure. It also poses a threat of accidents, endangering the lives of people.

The authorities blamed rains and subsequent waterlogging on roads for the non-functioning of traffic lights.

A motorist said: “The non-functioning of traffic lights results in congestion and leads to chaos at major intersections.”

Paramjeet, a daily commuter, said: “Some of the traffic signals on the GT road are turned off, which leads to chaos and confusion among people. Traffic personnel are also not seen at these places.”

It is a common sight to see motorists driving at high speed. Also, the absence the policemen allows commuters to flout traffic norms freely. Traffic signals play a crucial role in management of traffic and vehicular movement. Steps should be taken to repair them at the earliest, the residents said.

Superintendent of Police (traffic) Rakesh Kumar said, “Traffic lights have become non-functional due to frequent rains, which led to waterlogging on the roads.”
