Bathinda, April 5

The police on Friday arrested two persons with 53,000 intoxicating tablets and Rs 1.90 lakh from the railway road in the city. It is learnt that one of the accused had also got a contract for camera surveillance in vehicles for the Lok Sabha elections by the Election Commission.

SSP Nanak Singh held a press conference to announce the seizure. Incidentally, the police in Bathinda and Mansa districts have made seizures of such tablets in the past too.

Addressing a press conference, Dr Nanak Singh said, “Under the observation of SP (City) Jaspal Singh and DSP Gurjit Singh Romana, a special drive against drugs is going on, under which the police succeeded in arresting two accused and seized 53,000 intoxicating tablets and Rs 1.90 lakh from their possession.”

He said the Kotwali police party had laid barricading and were checking suspicious persons and vehicles near under-bridge on the railway road, during which they stopped a car (PB-03 AU 4061). On searching they found a plastic bag lying on the back seat of the car and found the drug tablets and Rs 1.90 lakh cash from inside it.

The SSP said the police immediately arrested the both accused and registered a case under the NDPS Act at the Kotwali police station. The accused have been identified as Rahul Aggarwal, a resident of Sirki Bazaar, and Surinder Kumar of Jaitu.

Dr Nanak Singh said one of the accused had got a contract related to Lok Sabha election, but further details would be ascertained during interrogation in police remand.

It is pertinent to mention that last week the Mansa police had seized 12 lakh drug tablets and arrested five smugglers involved in it.

Similarly, on March 20, the police had arrested a person after 74,000 drug tablets were recovered from his godown in the city.

Later on March 24, a medical store owner was arrested with 28,000 drug tablets at Pitho village.
