Dumping of hazardous bio-medical waste near the holy shrine of Baba Seikh Farid in the town on Tuesday by a doctor landed the Municipal Committee (MC) authorities in difficult situation.

The illegal act of disposing of the bio-waste on the roadside is in complete violation of the rules laid down by the municipality and the state government.

This wrongful act allegedly done by the doctor has been captured in the CCTV cameras installed around the holy shrine, but due to influence of the doctor, the MC authorities are hesitant in taking the necessary action.

In a complaint to the district administration and executive officer (EO) of the MC, Faridkot, Mangat Arora, an advocate, on Wednesday alleged that though the doctor was in the practice of dumping the bio-medical waste for a long time, she was caught doing so late evening on Tuesday.

It is alleged that the doctor had dumped the waste despite resistance put up by some residents of the locality.

The dumped bags contained used syringes, crushed bottles of intravenous drips, injection vials, fluffy cotton balls with blood stains, discarded medicine strips and gloves.

This blood-stained waste was strewn by stray dogs. On Wednesday morning, a team of civic body employees reached the spot and collected the bio-medical waste.

Amrit Pal, executive officer, MC, said the bio-medical waste had been taken into custody. “We are issuing a challan to the doctor and will inform the Civil Surgeon for necessary action,” he added.

However, Mangat Arora, the complainant said the MC needed to report the matter to the police for legal action against the accused.
