Amritsar, February 26

The city police on Monday booked four unidentified persons for allegedly stealing oil from electric transformers. The accused were booked when they were going to sell the oil in the market. A police team intercepted them near Company Bagh, but they managed to give the cops the slip.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Rajesh Kumar from the Civil Lines Police Station said he, along with a police team, was patrolling on Madan Mohan Malvia Road.

The Assistant Sub-Inspector said they had laid a naka outside Company Bagh and were checking vehicles. “We spotted an auto-rickshaw that was coming from the SSSS Chowk side. After seeing the cops, it had stopped a few meters away from the naka. We noticed their movement as the persons sitting inside it started turning the rickshaw in the opposite direction. On suspicion, we chased the auto-rickshaw,” he said.

The Assistant Sub-Inspector added that after observing the risk, the four unidentified persons came out of the auto before switching off the engine and fled away, leaving the auto-rickshaw behind.

While checking the auto-rickshaw, the police seized five canes containing 250 liters of oil stolen from electric transformers. A case under Section 379 and 411 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the unidentified persons.

Police officer Rajesh Kumar said, “We have impounded the auto-rickshaw and the stolen oil. An investigation is going on and we will arrest the accused at the earliest.”
