Muktsar, December 3

The number of dengue patients is increasing in Muktsar district. For instance, the count is nearing 100 in the district, which was 80 just a few days ago. Sources, however, said the total count of dengue patients was almost double the official figures.

Health Department officials, however, claimed that the situation was much better this time as compared to last year when the count had reached nearly 700 in the corresponding period.

Notably, unhygienic conditions, including garbage littering, sewage water overflowing in most parts of the town are some of the major reasons behind mosquito breeding. Though the department claims that the mosquito repellant fogging is being done, some areas are still not covered.

Dr Vikram Asija, district epidemiologist, and Dr Navdeep Singh, Civil Surgeon, Muktsar, were not available for their comments. A senior official of the Health Department said the situation was better as compared to other districts, just because of the timely preventive measures taken by the department.

Meanwhile, sources in the Health Department said a three-bed ward was specified for dengue patients at the local Civil Hospital. However, most of the patients preferred to get treatment from private hospitals and that too in major towns.

Meanwhile, the district administration fixed maximum Rs 600 as charges for Elisa test to detect dengue.
