The Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Bathinda, may lose its recognition as the Medical Council of India (MCI) has found many deficiencies in its working during the surprise checking conducted by the MCI team on April 25.
In its report, it has been stated that salaries of assistant professors and senior residents showed wide discrepancy with some getting Rs 60,000 and others Rs 2,50,000 for the same post. The salary of junior residents is only Rs 22,000.
Even questions on the hostel have been raised in the report. There are a total of 20 rooms against the requirement of 85. Residents do not seem to stay on campus. It seems that not more than 10 residents are staying in the hostel.
During the round of the hostel, there was no warden and no room allotment letters. HOD (orthopaedics) and technicians were found to be staying in the designated residents’ areas.
In view of these deficiencies, the executive committee of the council has decided to revoke the notice issued under the Establishment of Medical College Regulation (amendment), 2010 as the deficiency of faculty and residents as well as of bed occupancy have been brought below the limits prescribed in the regulation.
The executive committee had on April 28 further decided not to recommend continuance of recognition of MBBS degree granted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences and Research, Bathinda, and decided that the institute be asked to submit compliance for rectification of the deficiencies within a month (by May 28) for further consideration of the matter.
HS Gill, Chancellor of Adesh University, said that the report was not correct. “We have already submitted a rejoinder against the report of the MCI. The institute has been running for the past 12 years. It could not have functioned so long without proper infrastructure. The institute is open to any inquiry,” he said.
