Bathinda, July 10

The MCB formed teams to check the use of polythene bags in the city and issue challans to violators. The teams would carry out checks at shops, rehris (road side vends) and wholesalers.

The decision was taken during a meeting at the MC office on Tuesday. Officials of the PPCB attended the meeting regarding who would be co-ordinating with the Municipal Corporation during the checking drive.

During the meeting, MC officials discussed that a strict approach would be adopted as per the government act against those selling or using polythene (plastic) bags in the city. They discussed that awareness regarding the use of polythene (against using) would be conducted on a parallel basis.

Davinder Jaura, assistant town planner, MCB, said, “Apart from sanitary inspectors and the tehbazaari wing of MC, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) would work in coordination with the MC to ensure that the sale and use of polythene bags is not allowed. An intensive checking drive will continue till the use of polythene bags is not stopped completely.”

Jaura said, “Strict action will be taken against those using/selling polythene bags as per the law. The maximum challan amount for the violation stretches till Rs 50,000. The provisions of the act were discussed with PPCB officials so as to ensure effective implementation of the drive. Residents can use bags made of clothes instead.”
