The local unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) condemned the statement of Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi, in which she allegedly said doctors prefer caesarean section over normal delivery due to money to be earned.

Dr Kuldeep Mangla, president, IMA Bathinda, said, “It is an immature statement by a person of a high stature. Doctors are concerned about the safe delivery as well as the safety of a mother and child whether it is normal or caesarean section. The government should provide infrastructure in government hospitals and take the responsibility for the safety of pregnant women if it has doubts on the intentions of doctors working at private hospitals.”

Mangla also claimed that no statement had been issued on the working of quacks, who treat the pregnant women and bring them to doctors only in case of complication. He said the doctors were left with no option but to go for caesarean section to save the lives of the mother and child.

“I request you to stop doubting and issuing such statements. The government should constitute a board, which screens every pregnant women before the delivery and take a call on normal or caesarean delivery. It should also take the responsibility of any possibility,” he added.
