Bathinda, December 7

Students and faculty members of Central University of Punjab (CUP) observed Mahaparinirvan Diwas (death anniversary) to pay homage to Dr BR Ambedkar.

The participants lit-up candles and observed a two-minute silence to pay homage to the global icon in front of Dr BR Ambedkar Auditorium on the city campus.

Vijay Kumar, post-doctoral scholar of the department of economic studies, said, “Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, was not just the main architect of the constitution but also a jurist, economist, politician, social reformer and a religious leader.”

Dr Vinod Arya, officiating HOD of the department of sociology, in his keynote address, said, “Despite being the victim of reductionism and black out by the media, academia and intelligentsia, Dr Ambedkar shined in this world with his knowledge and ideological relevance and has been established now as a global icon. His global presence can be noted from the statue in Koyasan University (Japan), busts at London School of Economics (UK), Columbia University (USA), Simon Fraser University (Canada), York University (Canada) and United Nations Head Quarter (USA).”

“In the name of Dr Ambedkar, memorial lectures are organised by Calgary University (Canada), Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) and Brandeis University (USA). He effectively worked in the different domains of social, political and religious issues. Through his tireless efforts, he made every citizen legally capable, especially those on the margins of society, to contribute to their best of the ability into the making of this nation,” Arya added.
