Bathinda, December 9

Members of the Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant Contract Workers’ Union, Bathinda, today staged a gate rally and reiterated their plan to stage a massive state-level protest in the city and gheraoed and held a protest in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner on December 14.

Addressing a gathering, union leader Ashwini Kumar said the workers were now annoyed with the state government for ignoring their demands and protests over the past few months. They said during the December 14 protest, family members of the employees would also participate.

Ashwini Kumar said the staff members had already started taking out protest rallies and marches in the city and villages to make the public aware of anti-people policies of the state government.

Raising slogans against the state government, the protesters derided Congress leaders for promising that the employees working on contract would be regularised and going back on their promise after forming government in the state.

They accused the state government of favouring privatisation by announcing closure or merger of government schools, anganwari centres, Suwidha Kendras and several other institutions and offices.
