Bathinda, January 12

The police today produced notorious gangster Navdeep Singh Chatha in a local court after his two-day police remand came to an end today. The court sent the gangster to judicial custody.

Chatha was interrogated at the CIA-2 wing of the Bathinda police. The police took him on production warrant two days ago to find some clues regarding the snatching of a Swift Dzire car on the Bathinda-Goniana road on November 11 last year.

Senior police officials also interrogated the gangster regarding recent snatching incidents in Bathinda. When this car was taken away in front of the Nehianwala police station, police officials believed that gangster Gursimardeep Singh, alias Semma Behbal, was involved in it. Semma recently joined the gang of Vicky Gounder after the death of his close aides Jimmy Don and Bunty Dhillon, who were killed in a police encounter in Dabwali six months ago.

According to sources, the police believed that there was a connection between Semma and Chatha in the car snatching incident. Semma hit the headlines when he killed sheller owner Ravinder Kochar of Jaito in Faridkot five months ago.

Chatha is facing trial in a Bathinda court in a case of road rage registered against him and two others in which they allegedly killed a youth and seriously wounded two others on the Ajit road on July 28, 2016.

One of the injured was a Punjab Police constable. Chatha, along with Happy Luttal of Jujhar Singh Nagar, Gurjodh Singh of a nearby village and two other unidentified men, were booked at the Civil Lines police station. Tarjinder Singh, CIA-2 wing in-charge, said they produced Chatha in the court which sent him to judicial custody — TNS.
