Engg students win silver in go-kart competition

Students of Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE India) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Giani Zail Singh Punjab Technical University Campus, Bathinda, bagged the second position in the North Zone and the seventh position in ‘Elite Karting 2015’.

The event was held at the all-India level. As many as 133 colleges participated in the three-day event held in Bhopal at National RPM Racing Track in February.

Neeraj Mittal, Nitish Sharma, Nitesh Choudhry, Piyush Firan, Sandeep Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Satish Moreya, Manoj, Sunny, Satinder Singh, Deepak, Aman, Sawan Kumar and Nikhil were the members of the team.

Students have designed and fabricated a go kart named ‘Venom’, a version of Formula 1 racing car. The vehicle was tested for speed, balance, cost, safety and fuel efficiency.

The event was divided into three rounds. In the first round the team gave presentation regarding design, break, steering and transmission system. All the design calculations were done using solid works software to make the go kart stable in dynamic conditions and to provide aesthetics to resemble Formula-1 racing vehicle.

Akkermann’s steering mechanism is used in the vehicle. Power transmission system is very precisely designed from the racing point of view. Flexible break and acceleration peddles provided the supper flexibility to feet while driving the vehicle. The engine was imported from the USA by Briggs and Staton 6.5 HP and 190 CC.

The students were given training in the state of art automobile workshop organised by Elite Techno Group in Noida in July 2014. The manufacturing of the final vehicle took almost nine months.

The team participated in the event under the guidance of Prof SPS Johal, associate professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering and coordinator of the project. Sikander Singh, Amarjeet Singh, Sukhmander Singh, Rajesh Arora and Gurmeet Singh helped them to manufacture the vehicle. Prof Surinder Singh, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, set stringent parameters for the future vehicle.
