Bathinda, December 6
The Parinirvan Diwas (death anniversary) of Dr BR Ambedkar was observed in the district today.
Sri Guru Ravidas Mahasabha organised a programme to observe the day. Addressing a gathering, chief guest ADC Shena Aggarwal stressed on the need to educate the children to realise the dreams seen by Dr Ambedkar for a progressive India.
She made the gathering aware of the schemes being run by the state government for the welfare of the people belonging to the backward sections of society.
The Bahujan Samaj Party, Punjab, also convened a meeting of its members at Ambedkar Park in the city.
Raising slogans, they derided the Central Government for neglecting the rights of the weaker sections of society.
Party leaders Baldev Singh Mehra addressed the gathering and said it was sad that people were still being judged on the basis of their caste.
Giving examples of incidents from across India wherein people were mistreated, manhandled, beaten up or killed, Mehra stated that the perpetrators must be brought to book to set an example that such inhuman actions were not acceptable.
