Bathinda, August 10

The accumulation of dirty water, slush and heaps of garbage on the Barnala bypass road near Mata Jivi Nagar are causing a big inconvenience to city residents. Moreover, a number of incidents have also been reported in this stretch since the beginning of the construction of flyover at Rose Garden Chowk.

Stagnant water and heaps of garbage on this stretch also increases the possibility of vector-borne diseases. City residents alleged that due to the accumulation of dirty water for the past one and a half months this stretch emanates a foul smell.

Besides, during rain the condition gets even worse as two-wheelers, auto rickshaws and even small cars stuck here. Pedestrians have stopped walking along this road.

Hari Ram, a vendor, said, “Our makeshift stall is just behind this stagnant water and slush, many times we clean it, but due to the accumulation of heavy slush it just impossible for me to clean the whole stretch”.

Once we told the flyover construction firm to make a space for us, so that we can easily reach our makeshift stall, but he refused. After that, we didn’t say anyone, he added. Jai Singh, a vendor, said, “Nearly about more than 500 vehicles ply this road daily, of which around 100 commuters skid or stuck here. Due to which many commuters get seriously injured”.

Mayor Balwant Rai Nath said, “ I was not aware of the situation related to stagnant water and garbage lying on the Barnala bypass for the past many days. Now I will immediately order the concerned official to solve the problem at the earliest.”
