Devise strategy to check braid cutting, says MP

Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal today asked social organisations and the state police to devise a strategy to counter cases of braid cutting.

In a statement issued by her office, Harsimrat Badal said social organisations should work to put an end to superstitions regarding braid cutting.

She said people needed to be sensitised that such things were not possible and that they should not believe in such rumours.

The Union Minister said the SGPC and all Sikh organisations also needed to sensitise people to the issue and stop any attempt by anti-social elements or miscreants to create tension in society.

Nobody should be allowed to attack an article of faith of the Sikh community, she said.

The Union Minister asked the police to increase vigilance and investigate the role of miscreants in such acts.

Harsimrat said there were certain reports quoting reputed psychiatrists that some cases of braid cutting could be self-inflicted and that those doing so were trying to seek attention and sympathy for themselves.

She said this angle should also be investigated. — TNS
