Two youngsters were feared drowned while taking a bath in the Sirhind Kotla branch at Maur here on Sunday afternoon.

As per information, on seeing them drowning in the canal, a person taking bath nearby raised the alarm. Some persons jumped into the canal to save them, but the undercurrent was so strong that both were swept away.

After searching for them for around two hours, people recovered one youth from half a kilometer away from the spot where they drowned. He was immediately taken to the Civil Hospital at Maur, where he was declared dead by the doctors. The other youth could not be recovered. Later, an NDRF team was called to search him.

Two teams of the NDRF reached the spot and started search operation in the branch. Till the filing of the story, the youth could not be traced.

As per information, cousins Sandeep Kumar (17) and Jaspal Singh (16), residents of Gandhi Basti in Maur, on Sunday left the house on their motorcycle around 12 pm without telling anyone that they were going to Maur Khurd village to take bath in the Sirhind canal. It is learnt that the body of Sandeep Singh was recovered from the canal, while search was on for that of Jaspal Singh.
