After detaining a local entrepreneur on Saturday, the police said it was close to solving the case in which Rs50 lakh was demanded from a local commission agent through a letter purportedly sent by the Babbar Khalsa International.

The letter had stated either to pay the amount or face dire consequences.

Notably, commission agent Raj Kumar had informed the police about the extortion letter. Thereafter, a case under Sections 384, 506 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at the Malout police station.

The letter, however, had warned the commission agent not to report the matter to the police.

Speaking over phone, Manjit Singh Dhesi, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Muktsar, said, “The investigation is under way. We are likely to crack the case by tomorrow afternoon.”

However, sources said the police had cracked the case and found that the local entrepreneur in their custody had sent the letter in the name of the Babbar Khalsa International.
