The administration and the MC have decided to take strict stance against the use of plastic products in the district.

A meeting in this regard was held recently which was also attended by Justice Jasbir Singh under whose watch an STF was formed to keep a regular track on the use of plastic and ensure punitive action against offenders.

Justice Jasbir Singh took stock of the situation and also reiterated the need to adopt strict approach to discourage the use of plastic. In the meeting of the district-level STF management committee, Justice Singh directed administration officials that a strict action must be taken against shopkeepers and city residents who use plastic and there should not be any laxity while dealing with violators.

During the meeting, suggestions of the officials were also sought on the management of garbage in the city. He also took stock of arrangements in place to tackle issues of plastic usage and garbage disposal in the city.

Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill while talking about garbage management during the meeting said a garbage dump was set up near the Bathinda-Mansa road and garbage collection from all 50 wards in the city was done before being taken to the dump on daily basis. He said besides, separate teams were formed that collect dry and wet garbage from houses in the city and awareness camps were also being organised at regular intervals.

“To make the city plastic-free, as many as 269 challans had been issued till now and a penalty of Rs 1,17,500 was collected from violators,” he said.
