Bathinda, October 23

Members of the United Forum of Bank Union protested at the Bank of Baroda branch near the city bus stand over merger of banks on Tuesday.

As many as 200 protesters gathered at the protest venue and raised slogans against the Indian Bank Association and Union Government.

The protesters rued that the government was favouring big corporate houses and merging banks would limit the services provided at the government banks.

They said the decision, if implemented, would affect the working equations of employees as well.

Gulshan Oberoi, executive member of the union, said, “We vehemently oppose the decision of the Union Government to merge Dena Bank and Vijay Bank in Bank of Baroda. We will not let this decision to be implemented at any cost. The government, in the garb of globalisation, is providing licences to corporate houses to open banks. These wealthy lot, then use the money for their own vested business interests before running away to other countries. If the government implements the decision, we will be forced to intensify our protest.”
