Bathinda, May 23

An awareness camp on health education was organised by the District Health Department at Parasram Nagar on here Thursday. Residents of the area attended the camp who were apprised of different aspects of health education and its importance in one’s life.

Jagtar Singh Brar, Mass Media Officer of the Health Department, said the health education camp was primarily remained focused on spreading awareness against use of tobacco and its products.

Addressing a gathering of area residents, Brar said, “Smoking or tobacco use is not only deadly for its users alone but also spell trouble for their family members and near and dear ones. Regular and excessive use of tobacco products could cause heart attack and other cardiac related diseases. Tobacco accounts for 80 per cent of cancer cases reported in the country every year which is really worrisome.”

He said apart from the lack of awareness, it can also be attributed to the scant disregard for the regulations related to tobacco. Children below 18 years of age would not be allowed to sell tobacco products and punitive action will be taken those selling tobacco products within a distance of 100 ‘guz’ from any academic institution.
