Punjab Cabinet Minister Razia Sultana presided over the Independence Day function at Barnala.
She said her government would announce more welfare schemes for the people in near future.
While addressing a gathering at Baba Kala Mehar Stadium, the minister said her government was committed to root out drugs from Punjab and the special task force against drugs had broken the backbone of smugglers.
“The DAPO programme of the Punjab Government has been producing desired results and our government has succeeded in de-addicting a huge number of youths. After their de-addiction, our government has also started efforts to provide them jobs to keep them away from drugs in future also,” she said.
About debt waiver, she said Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had taken a big step to end the debt of state farmers.
She added that it’s first time that any government had announced such a big waiver for farmers.
“Till date, the Punjab Government has waived Rs 1,710 crore debt of around 3 lakh farmers. More farmers would get relief from debt in the near future as the second phase of the debt-waiver scheme has been launched by the Chief Minister. Our government has been taking all required steps to fulfil its poll promises,” she said.
The minister said her government was working for the welfare of all without any discrimination and started the pensions of all deserving residents.
About pollution in groundwater, she said her government had taken numerous steps to provide potable water to the people.
“Many areas of the state have been declared dark zone due to over-exploitation of groundwater. We have started efforts to provide canal water to all dark zones,” she added.
