Anganwari workers to protest against govt’s ‘wrong’ policies

Members of the All Punjab Anganwari Employees’ Union from the Malwa districts — Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala, Sangrur, Patiala, Moga, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Fazilka and Sri Muktsar Sahib — on Monday held a meeting at Teachers’ Home in the city. The meeting was headed by state president Hargobind Kaur.

In the meeting, anganwari workers and helpers held discussion on the protest against wrong policies of the Punjab Government. They also condemned the apathetic attitude of the government and planned to intensify a protest against the state government in the coming days.

Addressing the members, Hargobind Kaur said on Labour Day, which is observed on May 1, all the anganwari workers and helpers would come out on roads at the block level with black flags in their hands as a protest across the state government, while on May 6 anganwari workers along with their children would stage a hunger strike in front of houses of 77 Congress MLAs and MPs in the state. Later, from May 14 to 19, the union would a stage hunger strike for five days in front of the houses of state ministers in the state.

She said their union was fighting for their rights for a long time, but Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had not even given them time for a meeting, leave alone accepting our demands.

She said Congress ministers had done agreements with the union, but now the government was not implementing them. As a result, around 54,000 workers and helpers in the state were in tension and in the coming days they would launch an agitation against the state government.
