3 held for selling spurious ghee

The Bathinda police have arrested three members of a gang involved in selling adulterated ghee.

They used to prepare ghee by mixing chemicals in refined oil. Two women are among those arrested by the police.

The police have also recovered adulterated ghee in huge quantity from the accused.

Officials of the Health Department have sent samples of the ghee to a lab for testing.

An official at the bus stand police post said three accused, including two women, were selling fake spurious desi ghee in the residential area behind the bus stand.

After getting a tip-off, the police arrested the accused Sonu, Neeru and Chanda, residents of Gujarat, from the Mehna Chowk area in the city.

The police said they were investigating the source of the ghee and its place of production.

Experts said the cost of making this adulterated ghee was Rs 60-100 and it was sold in the wholesale market at Rs 180-200 whereas shopkeepers further sold it at Rs 280-350.

The police have registered a case under Sections 420, 272 and 273 of the IPC and Section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act at the Kotwali police station.
