Congress Wins First 8 Seats In Punjab

Ambala, Feb. 23. 

Congress won 8 seats in the 154-member Punjab Vidhan Sabha for which results were announced today.  One Congress member has already been declared elected unopposed, reports PTI.

Sardar Pratap Singh Kairon, Chief Minister of the Punjab, was re-elected from the Sirhali constituency by the thumping majority of 20,855 votes in a straight fight with a Communist, S. Gurmej Singh, who enjoyed the support of Master Tara Singh.  The Communist polled 13,506 out of the 47,897 votes polled in the constituency.

In the Beas constituency Congress candidate, Sardar Sohan Singh Jalalusman also won with an overwhelming majority of 10,656 votes.

Mrs Harprakash Kaur (Congress), the only woman candidate to be elected today defeated her independent rival by 7,215 votes in Jagraon constituency.

The Congress candidate in Gharaunda constituency, Ch. Multan Singh, Advocate, had a narrow victory over his independent rival, Mr Rullia Ram, whom he defeated by 224votes.

In the Malerkotla constituency, Mr Chanda Singh (Cong.) was re-elected by a majority of 2,822 votes over his independent Muslim rival, Mr Abdul Shakoor.

Sardar Waryam Singh had an easy victory in the Dera Baba Nanak constituency of Gurdaspur district.

Jan Sangh candidates who had contested in four of six seats for which results were declared today lost their deposits.  Others to lose deposits were one Communist and five Independents.

All the six constituencies had been delimited afresh since the last general elections as a result of states re-organisation.
