Paramjit Singh, alias Kalu (35), a resident of Manjh village, was shot dead by armed persons over an old enmity late on Tuesday evening. The deceased was returning home from his fields when he was gunned down.

The police have booked four persons — Dilbagh Singh, his brother Nishan Singh, their father Karnail Singh and Santokh Singh, all residents of the same village. All of them are absconding, the police said. Prime accused Dilbagh Singh (60) had come out of jail around a month ago. He had killed a resident of the same village, Mehal Singh, in 1996. Harbir Singh, brother of the deceased, said, “Paramjit Singh was returning home on his bike when he was surrounded by the accused, who shouted that they were there to teach him a lesson for helping their enemy Mehal Singh and his family. The accused fled away after shooting him.”

Paramjit is survived by his wife Palwinder Kaur and two minor sons Sahilpreet and Kamaldeep Singh.

Investigating officer Kapil Kaushal, SHO, Lopoke police station, said a case under Sections 302, 341, 506 of the IPC and 256, 27, 54, 59 under the Arms Act had been registered against four persons and raids were on to arrest them. “Dilbagh had come out of jail after completing his jail term for the murder of Mehal Singh. The duo had a land dispute. As Paramjit’s family had helped Mehal Singh’s family, Dilbagh kept a grudge against them.”
