Amritsar, July 9

A resident of Fateh Singh Colony, Avtar Singh alias Minta, escaped from the lock up at the Civil Lines police station after dodging policemen on duty.

The incident occurred late in the evening yesterday. The police have registered a case against Avtar in this regard. Meanwhile, officials claimed that he would be arrested soon.

Avtar is an addict and is wanted in a number of theft cases. He was arrested and lodged in the police lock up at Civil Lines police station. Yesterday in the evening, Avtar started crying and told the policemen that he was feeling uneasy and wanted to vomit.

The policeman on duty, Harbans Singh, said he took Avtar to bathroom after Head Constable Rajinder Singh asked him to do so. He said Avtar fell unconscious in the washroom.

Harbans said when he went back to inform Rajinder about the condition of the accused, he took a chance and fled from the police station after scaling grills.

SHO, Civil Lines, Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa, said, “It seems that Avtar enacted a drama to dodge policemen on duty. A case under Section 224, IPC, has been registered in this regard.”

The SHO said they had a tip off about Avtar’s whereabouts and he would be arrested soon. “Raiding parties are on the job,” he added. — TNS
