Amritsar, July 11

The Health Department launched the world population fortnight here on Wednesday. Officials asked ANMs and ASHA workers to identify eligible couples in their respective areas and make them aware of the various contraceptive measures.

Speaking on the occasion, Civil Surgeon Dr Hardeep Singh Ghai said residents could consult their nearest government health centres for permanent and short-term contraceptive requirements.

He said facilities for minor surgeries for permanent contraceptive measures were available at all community health centres and primary health centres. Dr Ghai asked health employees to counsel the newly-married couples on their needs for small families. “The increasing population is a cause of many problems as it is proving to be a burden on the existing resources,” said the civil surgeon.
