The work of beautifying the parking lot at the Amritsar railway station is under way on a war footing.

However, a matching environment is missing from the railway link road, which is marred by rampant encroachments and lack of hygiene. People cannot walk on the footpath as it invariably remains under the wheels of taxis, carriage trucks, food carts and others.

NS Gabarhia, a resident of the Railway Link road, said pedestrians did not find space to walk on the footpath as they remained occupied for commercial activities. He said even people did not shy away from urinating in the open. At many places, a foul smell pervaded many areas and people avoided such areas.

Rajesh Aggarwal, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Ferozepur Division, said the Amritsar railway station’s parking lots, outside platform No.1, were being revamped with separate arrival and departure lanes.

A separate lane for three-wheelers and a multi-storey parking would be raised to realise the optimum utilisation of space and offer swift and unobtrusive arrival and departure to vehicles.

Besides, LED lighting, landscaping, road furniture with benches, solar studs, cat eye reflectors, thermo plastic line and CCTV cameras would be installed at the parking lot. He said the objective was to offer maximum amenities and convenience to passengers visiting the holy city. So it was required to provide a clean and trouble-free main road linking the railway station.

Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu said the parking of commercial vehicles or otherwise would be removed as these were temporary.
