Amritsar, September 14

A woman, identified as Usha Sharma (42), a resident of the Bagh Ramanand area, committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance. She died late last evening at Guru Ram Dass Hospital.

Her body was handed over to her family after a post-mortem examination here today. Following the statement of her only son, Chirag Sharma, the police have registered a case under Section 306, IPC, against five persons.

They were identified as Bhupinder Singh, alias Bedi, and his mother belonging to Bath village in Jandiala Guru, Jaspal Kaur and her mother, a resident of Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, and Gurpreet Singh of Chur Beir Bazaar at Bhagtanwala.

Chirag said his father had gone to Thailand in February this year. He had some monetary dispute with the accused. He alleged that the accused came to his house on Sunday and demanded money. They started abusing her mother while insisting with her to call her husband back. They threatened that in case they failed to give money to them, they will take away Chirag with them.

Perturbed over this harassment, her mother consumed some poisonous substance. She was rushed to Guru Ram Dass Hospital where she died last evening. Today a post-mortem of the body was conducted at the Civil Hospital.

Sarwan Singh, investigating officer, said no arrest had been made so far because the accused were on the run and the matter was under investigation. — TNS
