Water supply to illegal buildings sought

AMRITSAR: Acting on the demanded of hotel owners in the walled city, the Department of Local Bodies has written to the Municipal Commissioner (MC) for the restoration of water and sewer connections to under-construction establishments.

Acting on the demanded of hotel owners in the walled city, the Department of Local Bodies has written to the Municipal Commissioner (MC) for the restoration of water and sewer connections to under-construction establishments. The water and sewerage connection was snapped after the intervention of the Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC). The Department of Local Bodies has written to the MC with reference to the recent amendments in the Amritsar Walled City (Recognition and Uses) Act 2016.

The MC had demanded applications from hoteliers to get their establishments regularised under the Amritsar Walled City Act. As many as 214 persons had applied for it.

Meanwhile, the MC has issued notices to 13 illegal ongoing constructions on the directions of the HC.

MC Commissioner Sonali Giri said, “The applicants have been demanding restoration of water and sewerage connection with the reference to the recent amendments in the Amritsar walled City Act. We have written to the Local Bodies for directions in this regard.”

Meanwhile, Advocate Sarbjit Singh Verka, who is pursuing the case in the High Court, said , “The directions of the Department of Local Bodies to restore the water and sewerage connection are contrary to court’s order. I will file a contempt case against the officials concerned.”
